Policy

PLACEMENT ON THE SALARY GUIDE

Purpose

To establish firm guidelines for proper placement on a salary schedule for all employees.

Authority

The board retains the authority to specify the salary of new positions and to determine the credit to be awarded for placement on an existing salary schedule.

Responsibility

The Superintendent of Schools is authorized to credit, for placement on the current salary schedule, prior service of an employee on the following basis:

A. All 10-month employees, initially employed prior to February 1st of any academic year, shall be given credit for one (1) year of service toward the next increment step for the following year (ref: teacher’s contract);

B. All 12-month employees, initially employed prior to January 1st of any fiscal year, shall be given credit for one (1) year of service toward the next increment step for the following year;

C. If an employee is hired at a salary less than the amount indicated on the current salary schedule for his/her prior experience, the board shall have the authority to increase the initial salary, the amount of any increment or the number of increments until the proper salary is reached;

D. The starting salary of any employee shall be an amount agreed to by the board of education and the employee (N.J.S.A. 18A:29-9);

E. All non-tenured employees shall be notified of their contract and salary status for the ensuing year no later than April 30th. If the employee desires to accept such employment, he/she shall notify the board of education, in writing, on or before June 1st, in which event such employment shall continue (N.J.S.A. 18A:27-10 and 27-12).
