Assembly Awards

    1. Algebra Award: To the 8th grade student with highest numerical average in Algebra to two decimal points. Selection is made at the end of the 3rd marking period.
    2. Math Award: To the 8th grade student with the highest numerical average in 8th grade mathematics to two decimal points. Selection is made at the end of the 3rd marking period.
    3. Science Award: To the 8th grade student with the highest numerical average in Science to two decimal points. Selection is made at the end of the 3rd marking period.
    4. Excellence in Social Studies Award: To the 8th grade student with the highest numerical average in Social Studies to two decimal points. Selection is made at the end of the 3rd marking period.
    5. English Language Arts Award: To the 8th grade student with the highest numerical average in ELA to two decimal points. Selection is made at the end of the 3rd marking period. .
    6. Spanish Award: To the 8th grade student with the highest numerical average in Spanish to two decimal points. Selection is made at the end of the 3rd marking period.
    7. Dorothy Ryon Music Award: To the 8th grade student with the highest numerical average in Music to two decimal points. The winner must also demonstrate a high level of interest in the arts and exceptional craftsmanship in their work, and must display good classroom conduct and responsible behavior. Selection is made by the Music teachers at the end of the 3rd marking period.
    8. Art Award: To the 8th grade student with the highest numerical average in Art to two decimal points. The winner must also demonstrate a high level of interest in the arts and exceptional craftsmanship in their work, and must display good classroom conduct and responsible behavior. Selection is made by the Art teacher at the end of the 3rd marking period.
    9. Beatrice Mazza Award: To an 8th grade student exhibiting talent in the arts. He/she must display a keen interest and persistent effort in the art products he/she creates, and also displays good classroom conduct and responsible behavior. Selection is made by the Art teacher at the end of the 3rd marking period.
    10. Growth & Achievement Award: To an 8th grade LRC student who has maintained a B average in classes for which he/she receives instruction in the LRC. A grade of C or above must be made in mainstreamed classes. An unsatisfactory, “u”, in conduct or effort is not acceptable. The student should exhibit the following qualities – positive attitude towards school, willingness to work hard and accept responsibility, and the desire to achieve academically during his or her middle school years. Selection is made by the 8th grade LRC teacher.
    11. Most Improved Student Award: The award for the most improved student in the graduating class is determined by a comparison of all students’ numerical averages to two decimal points. The numerical average of two decimal points is determined by the grades earned during the entire grade seven school year and is averaged with the 8th grade numerical average to two decimal points at the conclusion of the 3rd marking period.
    12. Most Improved Student in Physical Education Award: An award to the student who has shown the most improvement during Physical Education class during his/her middle school years. Selection is made by the Physical Education teachers.
    13. Good Citizenship & Excellence in Academics for Science and Math Award: To an 8th grade student that has demonstrated good citizenship and an excellence in mathematics and science. Selection is made by the designated teachers.
    14. History Award: Award is given to the 8th grade student who shows a general love of history. Selection is made by the Northfield History Teachers.
    15. Enthusiastic Reader Award: To the 8th grade student who is an avid reader and who excels in the location, the evaluation and utilization of information literacy. Selected by the Media Specialist.
    16. Student Council Award: To an 8th grade student council member who displays leadership qualities above and beyond what is expected of them, such as volunteering for service rather than being assigned to a service. He/she is an individual who is involved in all activities, both in school and the community. He/she exemplifies the role model one would expect of a student leader. Selection is made by student council advisors.
    17. Builders Club Award: Usually awarded to an 8th grade student but not restricted to grade. To a Builders Club member who exemplifies the following qualities or attributes – active member of the club; displays leadership abilities, attends meetings regularly, participates in club activities in the community and school, and exhibits good citizenship qualities. Selection is made by the Builder’s Club Advisor.
    18. Masonic Citizenship Award: To an 8th grade student with a minimum numerical average of 80. This student takes an active role in community activities and contributes to the welfare of the local community in a positive manner. The student must also have an active involvement in one or more community organizations or projects. School activities (i.e. Band, sports, etc.) are not considered community organization and projects. Selection is made by all 8th grade teachers.
    19. Excellence in Technology Award: Presented to the 8th grade student who has demonstrated leadership through cooperative group activities; helpfulness and consideration during all teaching activities; enthusiasm for new technologies; a deep understanding and command for new technologies and the ability to creatively implement this knowledge in his/her school projects; confidence and commitment to technological activities. Selected by Middle School principal and Middle school Technology Facilitator..
    20. American Legion Award: To a student in the top 25% of the class who also displays qualities of leadership and citizenship and is active in school activities of a service nature. Selection made by 8th grade teachers.
    21. Top 8th Grade Male and Female Athlete Award: This award is given to one 8th grade boy and one 8th grade girl. Criteria for selecting is: 1. sportsmanship conduct; 2. leadership skills; 3. attains B or above in physical education; 4. demonstrates athletic abilities when participating in physical education activities; 5. demonstrates confidence, conviction and commitment to physical education activities; 6. demonstrates excellent leadership skills and sportsmanship conduct when representing Northfield Community School. Athletes may participate in school sports – cross country, soccer, field hockey, basketball, volleyball, track. Selection made by Physical Education teachers and coaches.
    22. The Humanitarian Award: This award goes to an 8th grade student who shows exceptional concern for his/her fellow classmates and/or Northfield citizens through acts of service. This award is named in honor of Joyce Pullan and Carol Patrick who volunteered many hours to Northfield through works of the Northfield Cultural Committee.
    23. Doreen Nuttall Volunteerism Award: Presented to an 8th grade student who demonstrates a strong commitment to volunteerism and community service. This could include volunteering at local non-profits, participating in community events, or organizing initiatives to address social or environmental issues. Selection will be made by the 8th grade teachers.

Graduation Awards

  1. Top Scholastic Award (1): To the 8th grade student who numerically ranks first in the graduating class for grades 5-8, in academic areas only.
  2. Top Scholastic Award (2): To the 8th grade student who numerically ranks second in the graduating class for grades 5-8 in academic areas only.
  3. High Academic Awards: Given to graduating students who have maintained an “A” in grades 5-8.
  4. Barbara Longbottom Award: To recognize the attributes exemplified during the many years of service of Barbara Longbottom, Middle School secretary. Presented to the 8th grade student who exhibits a strong work ethic, accepts responsibility and has an excellent attendance record. Selected by the 8th grade teachers.
  5. Scholastic, Leadership & Citizenship Award: Given to a student in the top 25% of the class who volunteers their time inside and outside the school. This student is also a great role model for younger students to follow. Selection made by 8th grade teachers.
