SAFETY PATROLS

 

Purpose

 

The Northfield Board of Education recognizes the value of a student safety patrol as an essential part of the school program to instruct the children of this district in good safety habits and to provide opportunities for leadership training.

 

Authority

 

A. The board authorizes the formation of a school safety patrol of students in grades 7th and 8th, who shall serve without compensation;

 

B. Students will be selected by the grade level teacher and middle school principal based upon qualities of: responsibility and good citizenship, leadership capacity, behavior and maturity;

 

C. Members of the school safety patrol may be assigned to control and direct student traffic in the school buildings, on school grounds, on sidewalks or paths adjacent to the school;

 

D. No safety patrol member shall be permitted to direct or place himself/herself in the path of vehicular traffic, nor be on any street, nor open car doors;

 

E. The board authorizes the purchase of supplies and equipment to identify safety patrol members and enable them to perform their assigned functions;

 

F. The middle school principal shall supervise the school safety patrol.

 

Delegation of Responsibility

 

The Superintendent of Schools shall develop procedures to implement this policy.
