Regulation
ENCOURAGING USE OF BICYCLE HELMETS
The Northfield Board of Education and its administration and staff fully support compliance with the New Jersey Bicycle Helmet Law, N.J.S.A. 39:4-10.1
The provision, training and use of the bicycle by minor children are enhanced by parent/guardian supervision. The minor children’s use of the bicycle is governed by the laws of the State of New Jersey and both the minor children and those children’s parents/guardians are charged with the responsibility of knowing the applicable laws.
The use of a bicycle on school property is a privilege. That privilege is subject to the rules, regulations and policies of the Northfield City Board of Education, the laws of the State of New Jersey, the New Jersey Bicycle Helmet Law, N.J.S.A. 39:4-10.1, as well as, assumptions of responsibility in the care of property, the observation of safety rules and the display of courtesy and consideration toward others.
It is therefore the resolution and policy of this District and it’s board of education, in conjunction with the enforcement and educational activities of the Northfield Police Department, the Atlantic County Office of Highway Safety and their “Helmets 4 L.I.F.E. Program”, that all minor children who are students of the Northfield Community School and their parents/guardians are strongly requested to fully comply with the New Jersey Bicycle Helmet Law, N.J.S.A. 39:4-10.1.
It is not the responsibility of this school to make daily inspections or to ensure that a bicycle helmet is worn properly or that it is of the proper quality or construction, or that any students wearing it at all times when riding to and from school. The sole responsibility for wearing a bicycle helmet is primarily upon the student and, secondarily, upon his or her parents/guardians.
A parent’s/guardian’s or child’s failure to abide by the laws, rules and regulations of the State of New Jersey, City of Northfield and the Northfield City School District regarding the use of a bicycle helmet may result in a loss of the privilege of riding a bicycle to school for a period of time.
