SMOKING PROHIBITED
The Northfield Board of Education recognizes that smoking presents a health hazard which can have serious consequences, both for the smoker and the non-smoker, and is therefore of concern to the board. The board of education also recognizes that smoking habits developed by the young may have lifelong deleterious consequences. To promote the health and safety of all students and staff and to promote the cleanliness of school grounds, the board prohibits all smoking or use of tobacco products in all school facilities and on all school grounds at all times. Definitions of “school facilities” and “school grounds” shall be in accordance with definitions in the administrative code.
The board also prohibits smoking at any time on school grounds, at events sponsored by the Northfield Board of Education away from school, and on any transportation vehicle supplied by the board of education.
The board directs that the health curriculum include instruction in the potential hazards of the use of tobacco. Staff members shall, by example and persuasion, make every reasonable effort to discourage students from developing the habit of smoking.
Notice that smoking is prohibited in Northfield School District buildings will be posted at each public entrance in accordance with law. Students and district employees who violate the provisions of this policy shall be subject to appropriate disciplinary measures. The Superintendent shall prepare and the board shall adopt regulations prohibiting smoking in all district buildings and on school grounds.
For purposes of this policy, “smoking” means inhaling the burning or vapor of a lighted cigar, cigarette, pipe, electronic smoking device or any other matter or substance which contains tobacco. Chewing tobacco is also specifically prohibited by this policy.
