Policy
JURY DUTY
It is the policy of the Northfield Board of Education that serving jury duty is to be encouraged, except as otherwise set forth in this policy, on the part of its employees, and this policy sets forth the terms and conditions governing jury duty service by employees of this district.
Certified full time staff members scheduled for jury service during the school term for whom the administration indicates a replacement cannot reasonably be found shall seek from the Assignment Judge an excusal or deferment of service. Certified staff members shall obtain from the Superintendent of Schools or designee a letter indicating the lack of availability of a substitute in such instances.
All other employees of the district shall be paid full pay during the time when they are on jury duty. However, it is expected that if such employees are called to jury duty and are excused either for whole days or are excused for the balance of the day and such release occurs prior to 12:00 noon, they will work the balance of that day in the district at their normal duties.
Persons called for jury duty shall promptly advise their supervisor of such notification and advise of the inclusive dates for which they have been called to serve in order that necessary arrangements can be made for their replacement, as required.
Employees called for jury duty shall repay to the district the amount of the per diem paid them for the jury duty and shall, within five working days of their completion of their term of service, present to the business administrator a copy of the statement issued to that employee by the sheriff or other court officer making payment of juror fees. However, nothing in this paragraph shall be construed to require repayment to the district of any monies paid on account of mileage or transportation costs.
